List Life

So far, today:
  1. print Lucille Clifton's poem for African American lit
  2. read/grade the next stack of unit 2 portfolios, or at least put a huge dent in the pile

I Imagine Other People's Lists Are a Little Depressing...

Especially when they're endlessly recursive. Sorry about that, but it does help so to get something up here in public that I'm responsible for, and that I can cross out in front of other people, too.

Today/night:

  1. print feedback for stack 1 of unit 2 portfolios, distribute correctly
  2. print extra credit assignments from email
  3. read/grade extra credit
  4. teach 3 classes
  5. stay in a good mood the whole time (!!!!)
  6. make & print sign-up sheets for presentations
  7. grade discussion board posts
  8. buy printer paper
  9. buy assorted stuff at grocery store
  10. eat something
  11. print discussion board posts
  12. grade proposals for researched change arguments
  13. grade late submission ethics arguments
  14. read "Everyday Use" for tomorrow

  16. update Final Portfolio prep assignment & get it posted to ereserves

Listing

Ok, today, I have:

  1. finished grading a stack of portfolios
  2. prepped for 3 sections
  3. gone to the employee meeting for My Bar
  4. answered student emails
Which doesn't begin to get me out of the hole, really. Whatever---I'm marching on!

Tonight, before I go to sleep, I must:
  1. finish the next stack (major arguments turned in late, so it's not a full stack; phew)
Tomorrow, I must:
  1. print feedback for the first stack to turn back
  2. print the extra credit that got emailed in over the weekend
  3. finish another stack
  4. teach three sections
  5. read a short story and a poem, so I can
  6. prep African American Lit for the week
Which means, Tuesday, I must:
  1. grade discussion board posts for African American lit
  2. finish another stack
  3. teach two sections
Which means, Wednesday, I must:
  1. print feedback for the stack to turn back
  2. finish the stack I most certainly won't have actually finished by then
  3. teach three sections
  4. write the next short essay assignment for African American Lit
  5. grade the extra credit that was emailed in over the weekend
  6. and a few more things I've forgotten
Which means, Thursday, I must:
  1. print feedback for the stack to turn back
  2. teach two sections
  3. take a frickin' break
I can do that. I can totally make it to Thursday, if I get a break then. And I can also, maybe not quite get all of it done and not be totally screwed. It's gonna be fine. Right?

Killing the Exam with Self-Kindness

Reading that last post, I realize I'm not building in mental-health sustaining items to my lists. So:


All This Coming Week, Will:
  1. sit mindful meditation
  2. do walking/driving/dish-doing meditation at every possible turn
  3. call the folks who love me and ask to hear reassuring words
  4. be as nice as possible to SLP
  5. welcome SLP being as nice as possible--really work to see everything good about him and about what he does
  6. eat healthy food that I like
  7. eat some not healthy food that I like
  8. have sex as much as I can
  9. make time to watch recreational tv once a day
  10. get some damned sun
  11. stay up late and sleep late, as that's ultimately my most naturally productive schedule after more than a decade of working nights
  12. be as nice to myself as humanly possible
  13. fake it like motherfucking crazy till i motherfucking make it, every five minutes, if necessary

Listing Till I Make It

Ok, so yesterday, I did a long listing of things done to stave off despair. It helped, which is nice, so here's some more. I ended last time with:

Tomorrow will, goddamnit:

    1. catch up email
    2. teach (really, party with) Argumentative Writing for the last class session
    3. post final grades
    4. read the entire Bakhtin
    5. read the Emerson
    6. somethings elses

Here's what today has so far turned out to be:
  1. caught up email
  2. did the dishes
  3. got the soda for my contribution to the class party
  4. celebrated the end of the term with my Argumentative Writing students
  5. posted their final grades
  6. checked in via email with our department secretary to figure out hr forms
  7. bought new bras (my only white one broke yesterday, so...)
  8. had a most productive exam-related q and a with a faculty member
  9. promptly decided not to read the emerson again
  10. also promptly decided to postpone the bakhtin as long as possible
  11. read Marxism and Literary Criticism by Terry Eagleton
  12. wrote out a bunch of grouped readings of my literary texts in marxist theory, and a few others
  13. planned study session with Heartswater for Sunday
  14. got a call from a mentor about a job as assistant director of the honors program at My Institution
  15. will now go home and finish the dishes

Tomorrow, intend to:
  1. sort laundry
  2. do laundry
  3. clean the cat box
  4. make charts of theory/text connections with PTM, shero of my life
  5. read the intro to Jameson's Post-Modern Or, the Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism
  6. read part one of Gilroy's Against Race
  7. catch up email
  8. contact academic hr
Saturday, dream of:
  1. beginning the great re-reading of all literary texts
  2. starting/skimming the bakhtin, especially the notes provided by my professor when she taught it
  3. chart, chart, chart
  4. more, more, more stuffs.....

Listing My Way Out of Despair

In a desperate attempt to make myself feel better, some lists of shit done in the past few days:

Over the Weekend:
  1. Cleaned the entire house, including bathrooms and floors, but, tragically for the Hannah-Cat, excluding the catbox
  2. Did phone calls with all relatives, save the uncle
  3. finished Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl
  4. read Ooronoko
  5. read The Color Purple
  6. started The Scarlet Letter
  7. did notes for all four
  8. bought a wedding gift
  9. went to a wedding
  10. something else
Monday:
  1. finished The Scarlet Letter
  2. did notes for it
  3. wrote the prompt for my Argumentative Writing students' final exam
  4. caught up email
  5. did a little planning for next term
  6. tragically, figured out how to use hulu.com
  7. watched tv on hulu.com
  8. something else
  9. oh, stayed up way too late
Tuesday:
  1. email
  2. phone calls
  3. posted here, I think
  4. was offered another teaching gig for fall
  5. printed exam prompts and made it to class on time
  6. proctored exam
  7. went to academic hr for My University
  8. filled out hr forms
  9. graded final exam essays (all As and A+s!)
  10. figured course grades for all students (almost completely without help from SLP)
  11. watched more tv on hulu.com
  12. stayed up some too late

Today:

  1. caught up email
  2. figured out when to post grades for my Argumentative Writing students
  3. declined(!) abovementioned teaching gig for fall
  4. finished Me Talk Pretty One Day (guilty non-homework)
  5. caught up phone calls
  6. finished "Introduction: Axiomatic"
  7. finished "Panopticism"
  8. re-read "What Is An Author?"
  9. re-read "The Death of the Author"
  10. did notes for all
  11. at least found the Bakhtin
  12. posted three times here, I think
  13. despaired a bit
  14. planned with PTM to have her help me chart out theory/lit for exam on Friday, god bless her
  15. did a little more planning for next term
  16. will do the dishes when I get home
